90% & 80% Ag premiums on eBay
Anyone know what is a good general rule to the prevailing premiums for certain 90% and 80% (franklins, walkers, '64 kennedys, washington quarters, mercuries, and roosevelt dimes, Ca halves, quarters, and dimes) on and off eBay?
Depending on if tuition hikes, I may have to dump a bit onto the market; I guess the walkers have the highest premiums since they're older, or did the premiums on Canadian 80% jump up with the loonie? |

Re: 90% & 80% Ag premiums on eBay
I watched about 30 auctions last week from a buying viewpoint. Each had less that 2 days left when I saw them, most had less than 1 and were still at beginning bids with no reserves. To my surprise every one almost got up to melt if not above with shipping factored in- that must be gutwrenching for the seller. Watch the auctions for yourself. Definately want in lots to make shipping worthwhile. Good luck, Mark

Rarely will ebay beat them. You will have to hunt a long time and make a lot of pitches to hit a run, and then, will it have been worth the fuss. Now, I am not a salesman for APMEX, and so I will also say, that generally, my corner stores can and will beat APMEX on generic 90% and rounds and a lot of different things which I have been interested in esp specific date coins etc. One store may mark diff stuff up more than others though-- shop around. I got one place here that sells SAEs cheap as dirt another that marks em up-- and the markup on rounds varies too. But I can almost always beat apmex in person. But I am a recognized customer too, which may help on my tab when I check out. |
Re: 90% & 80% Ag premiums on eBay
It looks like most 80/90% on eBay is selling for better than spot. I bid spot minus shipping (or more for nice stuff) on a lot of auctions and I almost never win anything. I'm probably just wasting time on it but I do it for fun. If you go the eBay route, I would recommend listing your items in round numbers as much as possible: like $10 face value, $50, $100 face value, etc.... those seem to get the most bids.

Re: 90% & 80% Ag premiums on eBay
I agree, from better to worse deals (generally):
Coin shows --> Local coin shops --> Online (APMEX) --> eBay There are, of course, times when this changes. It also helps that when I say "coin shows" I don't mean the median or high prices, I mean I can look around at 50 tables and find the dealer with the lowest price on what I'm looking for. Also, when spot is volatile (just dropped a lot and I want to buy), coin shows and many local dealers are unreliable, as they tend to sometimes pull their metals off the table or charge higher premiums over spot. Your best bet here is either APMEX or a large local dealer with fixed markups over spot. |

Just don't bid on a $0.99 Gold Buffalo ;)
 No, seriously, it's gotta be a scam. Type in "gold buffalo" and you'll even see "gold buffalo copy" for 99c as well  I don't buy any coins off of eBay unless the seller owns a physical coin shop. |
Re: 90% & 80% Ag premiums on eBay
I feasted on E-Bay 90% and 40% silver coins for the longest times, but those days are over. Rarely do I see a great deal anymore, still, I do look because reveiwing completed auction show that a few deals are still out there.:bear_tongue:
